Everything below comes from the same question: what happens to a city — and to a person — when the means of production come within reach? These are the longest-running answers.
Fab City
Fab City began as a challenge launched from IAAC and Fab Lab Barcelona: move cities from "Products In, Trash Out" to "Data In, Data Out" — ship data around the planet, keep materials spiralling close to home — until they produce what they consume. Locally productive, globally connected, with 2054 as the horizon. This was never nostalgia for smokestacks; it is resilience you can measure. The challenge became a global initiative, the initiative became a foundation, and since 2024 I chair its board.
Smart Citizen
A sensor on a balcony is not a gadget — it is a citizen deciding that environmental data should not only flow from the top down. We built Smart Citizen as open hardware and open data: kits that let people collect and share their own measurements of air, noise, and climate. In 2014, The Guardian and Nesta recognized it among the top digital social innovators.
Fablabs.io
The Fab Lab Network grew faster than any directory could track it, so we built the place where it tracks itself. Fablabs.io is the online platform of the global network: more than 2,000 labs across 126 countries sharing knowledge, projects, and machines.
Fab Lab Barcelona
The first fab lab in the European Union, at IAAC in Barcelona. I co-founded and directed it as it grew from a room with machines into a research hub and a global coordination point for the Fab Academy program. Most of what I have done since walked out of that room first.
Fab Lab Bali
An R&D lab in Indonesia, working with local communities on digital fabrication and regenerative economies. It is the lab closest to home, and the one where the questions are least abstract — a distributed economy stops being a diagram when you have to live inside it.
